Brazil Inmetro and NIST Cooperation
by GSI Staff November 04, 2011
The cooperation between Inmetro (Brazil) and NIST continues as two NIST staff, representing the U.S. WTO TBT Inquiry Point visited Inmetro from October 24-27, 2011. The meetings focused on the Inquiry Point project activities under the ongoing U.S. – Brazil Commercial Dialogue.

Discussions covered overviews of the Brazilian and U.S. standards and regulatory systems, challenges faced by WTO TBT Inquiry Points and possible solutions, and how to make Inquiry Points more visible and supportive of their respective national industries.
A joint economic study completed earlier in the year, titled ‘Economic Impact of U.S. and Brazil Inquiry Point Information Services Under the WTO Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT),’ was released in Portuguese. The English version, published in May 2011, is entitled Economic Impact of U.S. and Brazil Inquiry Point Information Services Under the World Trade Organization’s Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade (WTO TBT): Exploratory Investigation and Development of an Analytical Approach and is available in PDF here.
Both offices are preparing industry-specific market ‘Guides’ to provide detailed information on product regulations, standards, and conformity assessment requirements for use by businesses interested in exporting to the U.S. and Brazil.
The NIST delegation visited the Brazilian national standards body, Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas (ABNT), where they exchanged information pertaining to the latest developments on standards-related web and information services.
Future project plans continue to be developed between the two WTO TBT Inquiry Points. Watch this space for news.
