Standardization for the Americas: Perspectives for the New Millennium
Nov 29-Dec 03, 1999 ( Gaithersburg, MD )
The NIST Office of Standards Services and eight private sector organizations sponsored a one-week workshop on "Standardization in the Americas: Perspectives for the New Millennium." The co-sponsors were: the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), Intertek Testing Services (ITS), Met Laboratories, National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
Leaders from 24 national standards bodies (NSB) in the Americas participated in panel discussions of standards-related issues of strategic importance. Formal lectures and candid discussions considered: 1) the changing role of NSBs; 2) enhancement of standards development activities and support mechanisms; 3) distribution of standards and related copyright issues; 4) industry support; 5) voluntary standards and technical regulations; 6) effective participation at the international level; 7) impact on trade; and 8) the role of the regional Pan American Standards Commission (COPANT).
This highly successful workshop gave renewed impetus to joint programs and cooperative activities among industry, government agencies, and standards organizations throughout the Americas in support of mutual objectives and establishment of the Free Trade Area of the Americas. Through a continuing series of workshops, NIST's Technology Services works with industry and other U.S. Government agencies to address technical issues concerning standards and conformity assessment practices, thereby eliminating or reducing technical barriers to trade.
+ Objectives
- To discuss hemispheric issues related to the harmonization of standards. Specific focus will be given to the strategic role standards play in facilitating trade and in supporting the establishment of the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA).
- To discuss the role of the National Standards Body (NSB), marketing and dissemination of standards and other support mechanisms, the role of Regional Standards Bodies, including the need for the development of regional standards, effective participation at the ISO/IEC level, standards and certification and registration activities, and standards and technical regulations.
