NIST's OLES Provides a New Technical Advisor for the USNC-TAG to the IEC TC 85
by GSI Staff November 12, 2010
Nicholas Paulter is the newly appointed Technical Advisor (TA) to the US National Committee’s (USNC’s) Technical Advisory Group (TAG) serving the International Electrotechnical Commission’s (IEC’s)
Technical Committee (TC) 85, “Measuring Equipment for Electrical and Electromagnetic Quantities.” In this position, Mr. Paulter can provide insight on the US position regarding technology issues as they relate to the TC 85, and foster collaboration between NIST and the international community. Mr. Paulter’s appointment exemplifies NIST’s support of documentary standards nationally and internationally. Over 300 NIST staff are involved in documentary standards development activities with a few, such as Mr. Paulter, serving in advisory and leadership positions.
The IEC TC 85 prepares international standards for equipment and systems that measure and test electrical and electromagnetic quantities. Standards developed and maintained by TC 85 are globally recognized and used worldwide by industry for the basic maintenance of industrial equipment to ensure safe operation; in power distribution systems for testing and monitoring of protective measures; by electrical utilities to ensure supply of quality power and reduce power pollution in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity; by testing and calibration laboratories; for legal metrology and educational purposes.
As the Technical Advisor, Mr. Paulter will provide oversight to the TAG which represents all US interested parties (companies, organizations, government agencies, etc.) who are directly and materially affected by the activities addressed by TC 85. Mr. Paulter is the Program Manager for the Detection, Enforcement, and Inspection program in NIST’s Law Enforcement Standards Office (OLES).
