Smart Grid investments and deployments are growing rapidly in the Asia-Pacific region. Regulators have an important part to play in the successful transformation of the energy infrastructure in this region. The Smart Grid approach integrates an advanced communications and information infrastructure with the power system, resulting in a broad range of intelligent applications and devices (including new tools that enable energy users to intelligently manage their energy consumption), and greater reliability.  But to achieve these benefits requires planning and the implementation of standards.

Focus of this Workshop

The workshop will focus on the standards and conformance issues associated with the deployment of the Smart Grid.   Participants will discuss issues associated with ensuring that regulations facilitate trade and the use of relevant international standards and conformity assessment programs that support good regulatory practices. Specific topics to be considered include:

•    Interoperability
•    International standardization
•    Lessons learned from Smart Grid
•    Cybersecurity
•    Data privacy
•    Vision grid modernization

Workshop Goals

•    Inform regulators in the APEC region of the standards (in place and new and emerging) that impact Smart Grid implementation
•    Increase regulators’ understanding of how interoperability supports regulatory goals
•    Share information among regulators on best practices concerning Smart Grid investments and deployments
•    Offer private sector perspectives on the development and implementation of Smart Grid policies

•    Strengthen coordination  and communication among regulators

Target Audience

•    Regulators
•    Energy providers
•    Energy standardizers
•    Energy policy developers

•    Standards developers

Workshop Partners

This APEC SCSC Project is organized by the United States and is being implemented with the support from the APEC Secretariat and the USAID-funded APEC Technical Assistance and Training Facility (TATF). The project is co-sponsored by China, Chinese Taipei, Japan, and Korea.  This event builds on recommendations from the APEC Regulatory Cooperation Advancement Mechanism on Trade-Related Standards and Technical Regulations (ARCAM) Dialogue in May 2011 in Big Sky, Montana. These recommendations were endorsed by APEC Ministers and Leaders meeting in Honolulu in November 2011.
